Roll out the red carpet, Vancouver, because there’s a lot to do this weekend – from an Oscars viewing party to a screening of The Space Race, to a two-day Japanese market. Here are 10 of the best things to do in and around Vancouver this weekend (February 28-March 2).

Black History Month: The Space Race Film Screening 

Kick off the weekend at the H.R. MacMillan Space Centre for a special screening of The Space Race, a documentary following the untold story of Black astronauts (ie- Guion Bluford and Ed Dwight), who reached the stars all the while fighting against disparities and discrimination in the community.

Hosted by astronomer Marley Leacock, the night will be accompanied by a Q&A session with Tumi Fabiyi, Program Co-lead from Ethọ́s Lab, which works to make science, tech, engineering, arts, and math more accessible and inclusive.

Tyler the Creator 

Rapper and artist Tyler the Creator is playing a Vancouver show as part of the CHROMAKOPIA tour, named after his recent album that came out in October 2024.

Japan Market Spring Vancouver

One of the largest markets for Japanese-inspired products is back! Vancouver’s Japan Market will have dozens of tasty food stalls and art vendors to peruse this weekend, as well as a number of highly-anticipated performances. This includes a traditional Japanese tea ceremony, or Chado, by master instructor, Yasuko Takahashi, as well as a Japanese calligraphy demo by a well-known local calligrapher, Kisyuu.

Vancouver’s Oscar Party 

The 16th Annual Oscar Party by Visitors’ Choice Magazine is happening at the Pinnacle Hotel Harbourfront, this weekend in honour of the 97th Annual Academy Awards. Guests dine amongst members of the Vancouver Film and Tourism industry, walking down a red carpet entrance. The experience includes access to a Gala Dinner and a Silent Auction.

RBC Dumpling Tasting Soirée – A Tasty Networking & Social Party 

An unforgettable night of dumplings, culture, and networking is in store at the RBC Dumpling Tasting Soirée! East Van Mardi Gras: GD/BC (Grateful Dead Tribute) & Big Easy Funk Ensemble 

The Big Easy Funk Ensemble is a band in East Van paying homage to the rich musical traditions of New Orleans, and they’re bringing the funk, jazz, soul, and blues to Vancouver this Friday, Feb. 28, alongside a Grateful Dead Tribute.

Vancouver International Mountain Film Festival

To Be Seen, To Be Heard: First Nations in Public Spaces

It’s not too late to check out the Museum of Anthropology’s multimedia exhibition (and world premiere of), To Be Seen, To Be Heard, which tells the stories of First Nations communities across BC during the period of “potlatch prohibition” and other forms of erasure in Canada.
