The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) along with the Ministère de l’Agriculture, des Pêcheries et de l’Alimentation au Quebec (MAPAQ) have recalled several foods sold across Canada for reasons that pose a serious health and safety risk to Canadian consumers.

The recalled grocery items have been removed from the marketplace for issues including microbial contamination, undeclared ingredients and the presence of extraneous materials, to name a few.

It’s important to verify if you have any of the affected food items. If so, the CFIA and MAPAQ have listed steps to follow regarding what to do with the recalled foods.

Recall Reason: Western Family brand Pot Barley has been recalled across Canada due to the presence of insects.

What You Need To Do: The recalled item has been sold across Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Yukon. The CFIA recommends consumers not use, sell, serve or distribute the affected products.

What You Need To Do: The black bean and corn salsas were sold across Quebec. Per the CFIA, it’s import to “not use, sell, serve or distribute the affected products.”

If you have celiac disease or other gluten-related disorders, do not consume the recalled product as it may cause a serious or life-threatening reaction.

  • Smoked Salmon | Variable | All lots where the label does not indicate the “freeze until use” instruction

Recall Reason: The smoked salmon, which was sold at the IGA Extra in Rivière-du-Loup, Quebec at 254, boulevard de l’Hôtel-de-Ville has been recalled as it does not properly indicate the “freeze until use” instruction on its packaging.

What You Need To Do: Per the MAPAQ, those in possession of this product who have not kept it in the freezer at all times since purchase are advised not to consume it. Furthermore, they should return it to the store where they purchased it, or throw it away. Even if the product in question shows no signs of spoilage or suspect odors, its consumption may still represent a health risk.

What You Need To Do: If you think you became sick from consuming a recalled product, contact your healthcare provider, per the CFIA. Furthermore, it’s important to check for recalled products and not consume, serve, use, sell, or distribute them. Food contaminated with Clostridium botulinum toxin may not look or smell spoiled but can still make you sick, with symptoms in adults including facial paralysis, unreactive pupils, difficulty swallowing, drooping eyelids, blurred or double vision, difficulty speaking, and a change in voice sound.
