Nearly four decades after its release, one of Journey’s most popular albums is still finding a place on the Billboard charts.
Journey’s Greatest Hits, released in 1988, has now spent more than 900 weeks on the Billboard 200, making it one of only a handful of albums in the chart’s history to reach that extraordinary milestone.
And the album isn’t simply hanging around the chart as a technicality. In July, it climbed to No. 44 on the Billboard 200, up from No. 60 the previous week, while also reaching No. 10 on Billboard’s Top Rock Albums chart.
That’s an impressive feat for an album that first arrived in stores nearly 40 years ago.
Journey’s ‘Greatest Hits’ Has Been on the Chart for Nearly 18 Years
Journey’s Greatest Hits reached the 900-week milestone in March 2026, according to Forbes’ chart analysis, becoming just the third album in U.S. history to spend 900 weeks on the Billboard 200. At the time, it was No. 81 on the chart.
Since then, the compilation has continued adding weeks.
As of July, it had reached 917 weeks on the Billboard 200.
To put that into perspective, 917 weeks is more than 17½ years of chart appearances.
And Journey’s accomplishment puts the band in some very exclusive company.
Only Two Albums Had Done It Before Journey
Before Journey’s Greatest Hits reached 900 weeks, only two albums had managed the feat.
Pink Floyd’sThe Dark Side of the Moon remains the all-time Billboard 200 longevity leader and is approaching the 1,000-week mark. Bob Marley and the Wailers’Legend is also well past 900 weeks.
Journey’s compilation became the third member of that elite group in March.
In fact, when Journey’s Greatest Hits reached 900 weeks, Billboard’s own reporting had The Dark Side of the Moon at 996 weeks and Journey’s album at 890 weeks earlier in January, showing just how quickly the compilation was approaching the milestone.
By August, Marley’s Legend had reached 950 weeks, while Journey remained the only other album besides Legend and The Dark Side of the Moon to have surpassed 900 weeks.
There’s One Song Doing a Lot of the Heavy Lifting
So, why does an album released in 1988 continue to chart nearly four decades later?
One obvious answer is “Don’t Stop Believin’.”
Journey’s signature song has become one of the most enduring rock songs of all time, continuing to rack up streams and chart appearances decades after its original release.
When Journey’s Greatest Hits reached 850 weeks on the Billboard 200 in 2025, “Don’t Stop Believin’” was still sitting near the top of Billboard’s Rock Streaming Songs and Rock Digital Song Sales charts.
And that connection has only become more apparent this year.
In July, “Don’t Stop Believin’” returned to the Billboard Hot 100 at No. 35, more than 40 years after its original chart run. The song also reached new peaks on the Billboard Global 200 and Global Excl. U.S. charts and debuted on the Streaming Songs chart.
That renewed interest helped Journey’s Greatest Hits make its own gains, including its debut on Billboard’s Top Streaming Albums chart.
The compilation contains plenty of other Journey favorites, including “Faithfully,” “Separate Ways (Worlds Apart),” “Open Arms,” “Any Way You Want It” and “Wheel in the Sky.”
But nearly four decades after the album’s release, it’s clear that listeners still can’t stop believing.
And at more than 900 weeks on the Billboard 200, Journey’s Greatest Hits has earned a place in chart history that very few albums will ever match.
