When The Neighbourhood released “Sweater Weather” in 2012, it didn’t become an instant hit.

And no one could have predicted its staying power. 

Released as the lead single from their album I Love You., the track quickly became the rock band’s defining hit.

And then, it carved out a path for itself as one of the most enduring songs, both in streaming and radio play.

Much of that initial success was driven largely by alternative radio, as “Sweater Weather” reached No. 1 on Billboard’s Alternative Airplay chart.

Staying at the top for 11 non-consecutive weeks was not only impressive, but it was also a huge achievement for an emerging band.

The single did not see the same domination on the mainstream pop charts. Though it peaked at No. 14 on the Billboard Hot 100, remaining there for 37 weeks, it didn’t happen until nearly a year after the song was released.

The slow-burn, however, worked in the song’s favor, as it later became a massive streaming phenomenon, overshadowing much of everything else they released, though other tracks like “Daddy Issues” and “R.I.P. 2 My Youth” have seen chart and streaming success.

“Sweater Weather” experienced a massive renaissance after going viral on Tumblr, Vine, TikTok, and, eventually, streaming.

14 years after its release, the track has now cemented a spot on Spotify’s list of “most streamed songs of all time,” landing in the third place behind The Weeknd’s “Blinding Lights” and Ed Sheeran’s “Shape of You,” according to the data released on April 23, 2026.

Variety credited it with bridging “the pre- and post-streaming eras by resonating with generations of netizens.”

Its longevity comes from the song feeling just as relevant in the present as it did upon its release almost a decade ago. “The internet really carried the song and clearly continues to carry it,” guitarist Zach Abels told the outlet in 2023. “I feel like we came out at the right time with social media and became a band that people can bond over on the internet.”

That year, it earned a RIAA diamond certification for sales in excess of 10 million song units, making it one of only 106 songs to reach the milestone at the time.

Abel and frontman Jesse Rutherford told the outlet the origin of the story is very nonchalant, as it was a riff Abel used to play all the time that they just turned into a song, noting he “didn’t have any plans for it.”

As for why it remains such a massive hit after all these years, NME credits its atmospheric indie-pop sound that captures the nostalgic “late-2010s aesthetic trends.”

And paired with melodic and catchy lyrics that tap into a “moody” and “romantic” feeling, it has become a seasonal anthem, making its way onto many fall-themed playlists year after year.
