Swiss snowboarder Sophie Hediger, who competed in the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics, died following a tragic accident earlier this week.
Hediger, who turned 26 years old earlier this month, was reportedly killed in an avalanche at the mountain resort of Arosa in eastern Switzerland on Monday, Dec. 23.
In a statement provided to Reuters, Walter Reusser, the Sport CEO at Swiss-Ski, the country’s winter sports federation, said, “We are speechless, and our thoughts are with Sophie’s family, to whom we express our deepest condolences.”

“With the tragic death of Sophie Hediger, a dark shadow has been placed over the Christmas days for the Swiss ski family. We are immeasurably sad. We will keep Sophie an honorable memory,” he added, according to Fox News.
Additional details about her death are being kept private in agreement with Hediger’s family and partner, according to Reuters. It’s unclear at this time if anyone else was injured or killed in the avalanche.
The athlete competed in multiple events during the 2022 games, including the snowboard cross. According to her Olympics profile, she also participated in the Nordic combined skiing event and the skeleton event.
She came in 7th in the mixed team snowboard cross and 19th in the women’s, and also secured her first two World Cup podium places in the 2023-24 season.
According to Instagram, Hediger was dating Swiss hockey player Dario Wüthrich. It’s unclear who else she is survived by, and details about any memorial service plans have also not been released.
