3 workers drown in German waste disposal drainage system

Berlin –

Three workers at a waste treatment and recycling company in southern Germany died Tuesday after apparently drowning in a drainage system, police said.

Bavarian state police said the accident occurred on Tuesday morning at the company’s premises in the city of Weyarn, southeast of Munich.

One of the men was working in a flooded ditch, and two of his lost colleagues rushed in to help. The three had no further signs of life.

Firefighters and rescue workers were dispatched to the scene. High water prevented divers from quickly finding the three missing men. Police said the bodies were only recovered when the water level was lowered by “technical means”.

The three men, aged 20, 27 and 28, lived in the area.

Police were trying to figure out how the accident happened.
