Subway closures this weekend will create more headaches for Toronto transit users, and here’s everything you need to know about the next round of TTC disruptions.
The TTC has announced that it plans to suspend subway service on Line 1 Yonge-University between St. Clair West and St. Andrew stations for the entire weekend of Saturday, July 19 and Sunday, July 20.
The upcoming closure marks just the latest in a seemingly never-ending series of full weekend outages and early closures plaguing the transit network, which the TTC blamed on necessary track work.
The 5.5 kilometre stretch of subway spanning St Clair West, Dupont, Museum, Queen’s Park, St Patrick, Osgoode, and St Andrew stations has faced numerous shutdowns and early closures this year, and remains among the busiest work zones across the transit network.
This stretch alone will be subject to full shutdowns or early closures every day for a period lasting from July 14-25.
Crews trying to navigate this stretch of subway over the coming weekend will instead be crammed onto shuttle buses covering the gap in service, though the TTC is advising passengers of alternative routes to help avoid what will likely be crush crowds at shuttle bus stops.
During the closure, Dupont, Museum, Queen’s Park, St Patrick and Osgoode stations will be closed, while St Andrew and St Clair West will remain open for passengers to purchase or reload fares.
The near-constant weekend closures may be an annoyance for those who rely on Line 1, but nobody should be surprised by yet another weekend of planned outages.
At the start of 2025, the TTC announced that the subway network would face a ridiculous 38 overlapping full-weekend closures throughout the year.
The TTC states that regular subway service will resume on Monday, July 21.
