'80s Rock Band Is Suddenly Climbing the Charts 12 Years After Disbanding

The Outfield is climbing the charts again, more than a decade after the English rock band officially disbanded.

The band’s signature song, “Your Love,” has re-entered the Billboard Global 200 at No. 182, giving the 1980s hit another moment in the spotlight. The song has now spent 31 weeks on the chart, with a previous peak of No. 127.

The latest chart appearance comes 12 years after The Outfield disbanded in 2014 following the death of guitarist and songwriter John Spinks. The band’s lead singer and bassist, Tony Lewis, later died in 2020.

Despite the loss of its two best-known members, The Outfield’s music continues to reach new listeners. “Your Love” remains the band’s biggest hit and has already enjoyed several waves of renewed attention decades after its original release.

The song first became a major hit in 1986. It reached No. 6 on the Billboard Hot 100 and No. 7 on the Billboard Mainstream Rock chart. It also spent 22 weeks on the Hot 100.

Now, 40 years after its original release, “Your Love” is once again appearing on a major Billboard chart.

“Your Love” was released as the second single from The Outfield’s 1985 debut album, Play Deep. The album itself became a major commercial success, reaching No. 9 on the Billboard 200 and earning a double-platinum certification in the United States.

The song was written by Spinks, who developed it with Lewis during a writing session at Spinks’ flat in East London. According to Lewis, the song took only 20 minutes to write.

The story told in the lyrics was also fictional. The character “Josie” was not a real person, and the song’s story was invented.

“Your Love” quickly became the song most closely linked to The Outfield. Its upbeat mix of new wave, power pop and pop rock helped it stand out during the band’s rise in the 1980s.

The song’s music video also became a major part of its success. Directed by Jon Jopson, the video featured the band performing in front of a backdrop inspired by the Play Deep album cover. It entered MTV’s schedule in February 1986 and later reached No. 2 on the network’s Top 20 Countdown.

The video has now found a new audience online. In March 2026, it passed one billion views on YouTube, making “Your Love” the first Outfield song to join YouTube’s Billion Views Club.

The Outfield’s comeback on the charts is part of a longer revival for “Your Love.”

The song received a major boost in 2002 after appearing in the video game Grand Theft Auto: Vice City. It has also been used as walk-up music by baseball players and has become familiar to sports fans through its use at stadiums.

The song saw another major resurgence in 2024 after a remix by Diplo. “Your Love (Remix)” was credited to The Outfield and Diplo and helped bring the classic song to a newer audience. The remix reached the top 10 on the Dance Digital Song Sales chart and peaked at No. 48 on the Hot Dance/Electronic Songs chart.

The Outfield formed in London in 1984 with Spinks, Lewis and drummer Alan Jackman. The group released seven studio albums between 1985 and 2011 and became especially successful in the United States, even though it did not achieve the same level of recognition in its home country.

The band went through lineup changes and periods away from music before returning to recording and touring. The original lineup reunited for the 2011 album Replay, which became the group’s final studio album.

Spinks died of liver cancer in July 2014 at age 60. The band officially disbanded after his death.

Lewis later returned to music as a solo artist and released Out of the Darkness in 2018. He died suddenly in October 2020 at age 62.

With both Spinks and Lewis gone, the latest chart movement for “Your Love” is a reminder of how strongly the band’s best-known song has remained in popular culture.
