Theatre Outré (Lethbridge) is auditioning for a remount our production of THE SISSY DUCKLING, a queer-positive musical for all ages (based on the children’s book by Harvey Fierstein), adapted for the stage and directed Nicola Elson. Originally produced in 2022 we are looking for actor musicians to join us in remounting this production and taking it on the road to share with new audiences in Vancouver and Calgary!

AUDITION DATES:
CALGARY – Monday December 9th, 2024
LETHBRIDGE – Monday December 10th, 2024

CONTRACT DATES:
REHEARSAL DATES: February 16 – March 8 in Lethbridge.
TRAVEL & PERFORMANCE DATES: March 9 – 16, 2025 – Vancouver with Carousel Theatre
March 27 – 30th , 2025 – in Calgary
April 9 -12, 2025 – in Lethbridge.
This production will be under the CTA Independent Theatre Agreement.

SYNOPSIS:
Elmer, The Sissy Duckling, is a happy, zany fellow that walks to the beat of his own drum. Sometimes he struggles to fit in though. When the other ducklings play baseball, he’d prefer to bake a cake. Or maybe he’d rather put on a puppet show instead of building a fort. He loves to do these things, but it can get a bit lonely when you’re often playing alone. It can be even lonelier if someone calls you a sissy… But Elmer is tough and caring and smart, and he’s about to teach his family, and his entire flock, that being different is A-Okay!



CASTING:
General Note: candidates will be able to showcase their acting and musical skill sets. We are looking for actors who can be physical, sing and play an array of instruments such as guitar, bass, banjo, ukulele, and percussion. An actor does not need to be able to play all of the above-mentioned instruments and we are certainly open to actors who play other instruments, but being skilled in one or more instruments is essential for all roles.



ROLES:
Actor 1: Drae (class bully), Narrator 1, Musician

Actor 2: Mama, Narrator 2, Bully’s sidekick, Musician


Actor 3: Papa, Narrator 3, Mr. Hennypecker (Elderly School Teacher), Musician
**note the role of Elmer has already been cast**

AUDITION REQUIREMENTS:
1. One monologue no longer than two minutes in length that showcases a physically dynamic character suitable for a young audience.
2. A song performed with a musical instrument that is theatrical. The content of the song does not need to be suitable for young audiences, but the aesthetic should be.
3. Sides from The Sissy Duckling might be provided for the actor to cold read at the audition.

Theatre Outré is open to accepting actors from Alberta, as long as they are able to be in Lethbridge for the duration of rehearsals.
