I’m a big fan of going for walks ever since certain world events five years ago left me desperate to leave my house now and then. Not only does a nice little stroll get your body moving, but it’s also a great opportunity to explore new parts of Calgary.
Calgary has no shortage of fantastic nature parks and hiking trails, but urban hikes are also a great option for those who like to people-watch, discover new places, and maybe stop for a little treat along the way. Here are ten routes to consider for your next walk.
Bankview
Start in Sunalta to take in the neighbourhood’s pocket parks, local gardens and green spaces before heading up to the bustling neighbourhood of Bankview. From there, you can roam the park and condo-lined streets or detour to 17th Avenue to take in the variety of coffee shops, restaurants, and patios.
Starting point: Sunalta Station — 10 Ave. S.W.;
Bow River
This route is popular for its vicinity to the beautiful Bow River, but it also offers a glimpse into the surrounding neighbourhoods. Start at Edworthy Park and venture into North Parkdale, and maybe even stop for a homemade sandwich at Lazy Loaf and Kettle.
Starting Point: Edworthy Park — 5050 Spruce Dr. S.W.
Briar Hill
Start at Grasshopper Hill for a beautiful view of the downtown skyline before descending into Hillhurst and Kensington. You’ll spot plenty of lovely gardens in the spring and summer!
Starting point: Grasshopper Hill — 2019 Briar Ces. N.W.
Inglewood
Walking through Inglewood is an easy stroll full of plenty of local shops, restaurants, and art galleries. To make the stroll longer, you can head over to the adjacent neighbourhood of Ramsay or peruse the Elbow River.
Starting point: Anywhere along 9th Ave. S.E.
Bridgeland
Follow the Bow River Pathway east past the zoo, head through Tom Campbell’s Hill, and end in the bustling inner-city neighbourhood of Bridgeland. You’ll get great views and local eats, and maybe even spot an animal when you pass the Wild Canada enclosure.
Starting point: Bridgeland Station — Median of Memorial Dr. N.E.
Brittania
Kick off your walk with a coffee from Monogram at Brittania Plaza. From there, you can either walk the nearby cerescents to look at the gorgeous houses or head down the hill to Elbow River to enjoy a picnic on Sandy Beach.
Starting point: Britannia Plaza — Elbow Dr. & 49 Ave. S.W.
Downtown
Calgary’s downtown is rife with incredible murals and public art, and it’s yours to discover! Hop off the C-Train and see how many murals, sculptures, and other pieces of art you can spot.
Starting point: Anywhere downtown
Ramsay
This hike combines incredible Calgary views with the charm of an old neighbourhood. Start at Roxoboro Park and make the ~4-kilometre trek to Ramsay, where you’ll be met with character homes, charming cafes, and a vibrant locale.
Starting point: Roxboro Glen Rd. S.W
Upper Mount Royal
Confession: I love walking around and looking at big houses, and Upper Mount Royal is the perfect place to do that. Winding crescents and hills make for a customizable experience, and you’ll likely spot some historic homes along with new builds.
Starting point: Anywhere in Upper Mount Royal
Riley Park
You’d never know that in an enclosure of trees just off Kensington, there’s a massive public park! A path lining Riley Park is perfect for a leisurely stroll, or you can kick things up a notch by heading through Sunnyside to explore the beauty of the Bow River Pathway.
Starting point: Riley Park — 800 12 St. N.W.
