Amidst growing financial concerns and tariff anxieties, American travelers are adjusting their behaviors, including stricter trip budgeting and destination selection based on affordability.

American Travelers’ Economic Concerns

Despite travel being essential for over a third of American travelers, the financial outlook continues to become more pessimistic due to worries about tariffs and economic instability. With stable current financial situations, future financial expectations have taken a hit, with 18.7% believing they will be worse off financially in the coming year, the highest rate since January 2022. Further, 55.8% of American travelers with stock investments report diminished financial security due to stock market volatility. A growing number, 56.9%, expect the U.S. to enter an economic recession in the next six months.

Impact of Tariffs on Travel Sentiments

Most American travelers closely follow news about U.S. tariffs and changes in trade policy, with 73.3% expressing concern. Most of these travelers (71.3%) believe these tariffs will increase their cost of living next year. This sentiment was particularly strong among Gen X and Millennials and travelers with an average household income of $200,000 or more.

Shifts in Travel Behaviors

In response to these perceived economic headwinds, American travelers adjust their habits. Over half (53.2%) still believe travel is a worthwhile investment, even in a recession. Furthermore, 60.5% expect leisure travel to be a high budget priority in the next three months. However, there have been declines in anticipated international travel and overall travel budgets, and 47.6% expressed hesitation about traveling abroad due to concerns about American reception overseas.

Adaptations to Economic Challenges

As a result of these concerns, 11.6% of American travelers have already made changes to their travel plans, while 35.9% are considering such changes. Many are adopting cost efficiency measures, such as strict travel budgets, opting for budget-friendly destinations, and focusing on free or low-cost experiences.

Recent and Future Travel Volume

Despite these concerns, recent travel volume has remained steady, with 44.5% of American travelers reporting an overnight leisure trip in the past month. However, the number of anticipated leisure trips in the next year has decreased slightly, with an average of 3.7 trips expected in the next year, down from 3.8 last month. Nonetheless, American travelers’ excitement for travel remains high, scoring 8.2 out of 11.
