Monster Hunter Wilds has sold 10.7 million copies since its Feb. 27 launch, Capcom announced in its Q2 2025 financial report. That sounds impressive, but Wilds is still being outpaced by its four-year-old little sibling, Monster Hunter Rise, with the latter selling approximately 150,000 more copies than Wilds during Capcom’s previous fiscal quarter.
At the end of June, Capcom reported Wilds had sold approximately 10.5 million copies. Now, the total is 10.7 million. Rise had sold 17.5 million by the end of June and is up to 17.8 million now. It’s true that Monster Hunter games always have long tails (ha). Rise, for example, sold 7.5 million copies in its first six months, but took two years and a multiplatform launch to reach 12 million. Still, it’s pretty unusual for an older title in a series to outsell a new one, especially so soon after release.
Capcom didn’t address the anomaly in its financial report. However, even a cursory glance at the various Monster Hunter communities across Steam and Reddit gives us a sense of idea why people are sticking with older MonHun games over Wilds. Large maps with no incentive to explore, hunts that most long-time players considered easy even at higher difficulty levels, a lackluster postgame, and a general lack of friction and sense of progression rank among the most common complaints. The game has also seen continued performance issues on PC.
Above all these issues, though, is a lack of consistent post-launch support. Capcom maintained a regular cadence of updates for Monster Hunter Rise following its launch. By the time it hit the 7.5 million sales mark in September 2021, Rise had received six major patches that featured new monsters, expanded difficulty settings, and weekly quests. Wilds has had five in the same period, some of which only added cosmetics or slightly tweaked versions of existing monster hunts.
Sure, some of Rise‘s updates only included collaboration events, but Wilds hasn’t even had many of those. Rise had Mega Man, Okami, Street Fighter, and Monster Hunter Stories events in its first five months. Wilds had a Street Fighter event and a FFXIV crossover.
It’s been four months since Capcom added a new monster to Wilds, and there have only been three fresh critters added to the game since launch. Rise got three new monsters in its second month and several more in title updates that followed the PC launch. Capcom announced Rise‘s expansion Sunbreak in September 2021, and there’s no sign of a Wilds expansion yet. You get the idea.
