A scenic trail running through this coastal B.C. town is lined with rushing waterfalls

1 November 20253 Mins Read

The Cowichan region is an underrated part of B.C. that deserves a trip all on its own, but if you’re looking to explore as much of the central Island as you can in one go, it’s a great area to focus your efforts! Sitting just north of Victoria, Cowichan spans several charming towns, including Chemainus, Duncan, Ladysmith, and Lake Cowichan. The latter is lined with parks, beaches, and walking trails that are worth a visit any time of year, as well as multiple waterfalls and historic bridges that absolutely stand out during the fall season.

During the warmer months, the beaches are perfect for paddleboarding, picnicking, and camping, with the Cowichan River nearby for optimal flyfishing. Every fall and spring, the waterfalls dotting the Cowichan Valley Trail are at their peak, so now is the perfect time to start planning a visit.

Cowichan Valley Trail

Among its many other highlights, the multi-use trail extends 120 km, winding through lush forests, pristine lakes, and rushing rivers. The crown jewel, however, is the historic Kinsol Trestle, one of the world’s tallest timber rail trestles, spanning the Koksilah River. The spectacular bridge was originally built at the turn of the 20th century, and was restored in recent years to preserve its legacy and history.

Visitors making their way towards the Kinsol Trestle are greeted with panoramic views of the surrounding valley, which are well worth the trip all on their own.

Part of the Trans Canada Trail, the Cowichan Valley section of the trail runs from the Capital Regional District boundary at the top of the Malahat, north to Shawnigan Lake and the Kinsol Trestle, west to the Town of Lake Cowichan, then north to the Nanaimo Regional District.

Local arts

If the arts are more your scene, there are a ton of local galleries, community theatres, and museums to check out in the area, many of which celebrate the region’s rich Indigenous cultural history. This includes the Cowichan Valley Museum, Judy Hill Gallery, and the Chemainus Theatre Festival—a non-profit theatre showcasing some of the finest performers in Canada.

Looking to complete your Vancouver Island road trip with another beautiful stop along the coast? Head to Ladysmith for some of the mildest fall/winter weather around.

How to get there: Take a ferry from West Vancouver to Nanaimo and drive 55 minutes to Lake Cowichan via Trans Canada Highway/BC-1 S and BC-18 W.
