A 4.0 magnitude earthquake just hit near Victoria and shaking was felt in Vancouver

An earthquake hit off the coast of Victoria early on Thursday morning, and there have been reports of people feeling it in both the Vancouver and Victoria areas.

The earthquake had a magnitude of 4.0, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). The USGS said that the earthquake occurred at 4:05 a.m., and had a depth of 52 km. British Columbians took to X, formally Twitter, to report if they felt the shake.

Even people in the Vancouver area seem to have felt the tremor, which one X user has lasted about five seconds.

Emergency Info BC also said that it was “lightly felt” near Saanichton, which is in the Greater Victoria area, and that “there are no reports of damage or injury and none are expected.”

In the replies to Emergency Info BC’s post, people reported feeling the quake in Surrey, Downtown Vancouver, White Rock, Abbotsford, and North Saanich.

“Lightly?! Woke up to my entire apartment vibrating in #Abbotsford,” one X user wrote.

Some residents say the earthquake felt large.
