In the Great North, there’s no telling what you’ll see above or just below the surface, but this is especially true when exploring Banff in Alberta. From wildlife to mountain views, Canada’s first national park is full of surprises, and Lake Minnewanka is among the best of them.

Also known as Minn-waki or “Lake of the Spirits” by the Stoney Nakoda First Nations people, this enchanting destination is not only mysterious, but big, blue, and beautiful, which will become clear during a stunning cruise that sets sail this spring.

Lake Minnewanka

On May 10, the Lake Minnewanka Cruise will take to the waters for the 2025 season, and while it’s no week-long excursion in the Caribbean, this experience will be a magical one.

Described as “one of Banff’s most iconic locations,” the beauty of the lake has been enjoyed for centuries.

Not only were the shores a hunting ground, a meeting place, and a campsite, but it was also home to Minnewanka Landing, a summer village which consisted of four avenues and three streets.

From far and wide, tourists would visit and stay in their hotels, eat at their restaurants, and go sailing, but in 1941, it was washed away by a nearby reservoir.

All that remains now? Hotel foundations, wharves, an oven, a chimney, a cellar, bridge pilings, and sidewalks all frozen in time under the water.

With four tours available, visitors will see Banff’s largest lake from a whole new perspective — on deck and with other adventurers.

If you’d like to tour the beautiful valley landscapes, you can now book a classic cruise or enjoy a couple of craft cold ones during the Beer Voyage — an 18+ excursion.

If, however, you have kids, there’s also a premium experience where you’ll stop to view Devil’s Gap and sample local pine tea, as well as a junior cruise made for children under 12 and their families.

No matter what you choose, watch for wildlife, take photos, and have a picnic lunch before or after you board.

To get there, guests can either drive and park at least two hours before their cruise call time, or take a Roam Transit bus and save themselves the hassle.
