Alberta is home to a significant number of provincial parks, each with its own unique landscapes and diverse array of animals. In fact, there’s one not far from Edmonton’s own city limits!

Just 35 minutes east of Edmonton lies Elk Island National Park, a UNESCO-designated Biosphere Reserve.

Homeland to the Cree and Métis and within the territory of Treaty 6, Elk Island has been used, and will continue to be used, by Indigenous Peoples. With its dedication to the land and its importance, Elk Island continues to thrive and remain a cornerstone for not only the conservation of wildlife, such as its bison, but also for the preservation of Indigenous culture.

Since the beginning of summer and ending Sept. 2, Elk Island has been offering free admission to the park. In addition to free admission, they’ve also been offering a 25 percent discount on camping and overnight stay fees.

This gives everyone a chance to check out all the exciting activities Elk Island has to offer.

What to do

During this summer, the national park is offering public programs every day of the week.

Start the week off with Stones ‘n’ Bones on Sunday, where they’ll be telling the stories and adaptations of the people who’ve called Amiskwaciy home through the lens of archaeology. Looking for something more cozy? Visit on Saturday for Dark Sky Stories Campfire, where you can settle in next to the campfire to hear fascinating dark sky stories.

If you happen to be busy on weekends, check out one of the Daily Discoveries on any weekday. They offer a different activity every single day.

For those who prefer not to be on a schedule, there are various trails to explore at your own pace. The Lakeview Trail offers an easy pace and a panoramic view, and the Wood Bison Trail is difficult, but gives people the perfect opportunity to catch a glimpse of the enchanting wood bison.
