The Calgary zoo just got a new (and very exciting) resident. A 20-year-old polar bear named Yellé has arrived this week, and he’s already starting to adjust to life in Calgary.
Yellé’s arrival comes with a purpose. The zoo has been looking for the right companion for their current 10-year-old resident polar bear, Siku, making this a meaningful addition for the team.
How the bears will be introduced
Introducing two polar bears is not something that happens overnight. The Calgary Zoo team has a careful plan to make sure that both Siku and Yellé feel safe and comfortable.
First, they’ll start with scent exchanges, allowing each bear to get used to each other’s smell. Then they’ll be able to see each other through a safe barrier, while experts watch them closely.
Finally, when both bears are ready, they will move into a shared space. Each stage is carefully guided by animal care experts who have years of experience in observing polar bear behaviour, ensuring that both bears feel stress-free during the process.
When you can see Yellé
Visitors won’t have to wait too long to see Yellé in action. Once his quarantine and gradual introduction to Siku are complete, you can expect to see them roaming around their enclosure in April.

Supporting polar bear conservation
Beyond the excitement, there’s an important message behind Yellé’s arrival. Since 2023, the Calgary Zoo has been working with Polar Bears International as an Arctic Ambassador Centre.
Yellé and Siku aren’t just adorable; they’re teaching visitors about why protecting polar bear habitats matters and the challenges polar bears face.
This exciting new chapter at the Calgary Zoo shows how much planning, care, and research go into creating an unforgettable wildlife experience. Guests can look forward to observing fascinating behaviour, learning about conservation, and enjoying everything Wild Canada has to offer.
