The Made in Abyss anime franchise is getting a new series of films, Kadokawa announced Thursday, with the first part set to hit movie theaters in 2026. Most of the cast and staff from the original anime series are set to return, according to Anime News Network, including studio Kinema Citrus and director Masayuki Kojima, alongside Hideyuki Kurata doing the series composition.

The original voices for Reg, Riko, Nanachi, and Faputa are also returning for the film. An official image of the upcoming movie also features two new characters named Tepaste and Cravagli, which can be seen below.

The Made in Abyss anime first debuted with a 13-episode TV series in July 2017, adapting Akihito Tsukushi’s dark fantasy manga. Its second season, Made in Abyss: The Golden City of the Scorching Sun, aired in July 2022 and concluded with a one-hour finale in September that same year.

This isn’t the franchise’s first venture into film. Two recap movies preceded the 2020 release of Made in Abyss: Dawn of the Deep Soul, which adapted the Ido Front Arc. The film premiered in Japan in January 2020, earning over 102 million yen (approx. $929,300) during its opening weekend. It was later released in select U.S. and Canadian theaters after a delay related to the COVID-19 pandemic.

For the uninitiated, Made in Abyss is a deceptively cute yet brutal adventure set around a mysterious, massive pit known as the Abyss. Orphaned Riko dreams of exploring its dangerous depths like her mother, only to discover a strange, humanoid robot boy during her descent.

Made in Abyss, both compilation films, and Made in Abyss: Dawn of the Deep Soul are streaming on HIDIVE.
