Rewind all the way back to March 2021 (just over four years ago!) and Netflix released its faith-based family musical A Week Away. All these years later, we got some surprising intel that it’s coming back for a series, but it won’t be on Netflix; rather, it’ll be streaming on a new platform.

Starring Kevin Quinn and Bailee Madison, A Week Away premiered on Netflix globally on March 26, 2021. It revolved around a troubled teen who takes a leap of faith by attending summer camp — and unexpectedly finds love, friends, and a place to belong. Michael W. Smith, Amy Grant, and Steven Curtis Chapman were amongst the Christian musicians who contributed to the film.

While we don’t have viewership numbers for the movie’s initial release, we do know it wasn’t the biggest performer in the Netflix top 10, which had been rolled out the year prior. It featured in the top 10s in over 75 countries, with most being for a few days. It spent six days in the US movie top 10s. Looking at the Netflix Engagement Reports, it picked up 6.9 million hours watched between 2023 and 2024, which equates to 4.2 million views.

Production on the new series is being handled by the production company Monarch Media, which also worked on the original movie, as well as titles like Journey to Bethlehem, Tangles, and last year’s Netflix Original breakout, Hitman, starring Glenn Powell.

Plans are to begin production in May 2025 in Nashville, Tennessee, presumably for a 2026 return. Steve Barnett and Vicky Patel are producing with Kali Bailey (who worked on the original) returning to write alongside Alan Powell, who will both co-write and direct.

A short synopsis for the series has surfaced and reads as follows: “Camp Aweegaway always has an interesting group of students and staff, and there is never a dull moment. Big dance numbers, great songs, and meaningful storylines will keep you humming along, tapping your toes, and invested in the lives of our Camp Aweegaway family.”

A representative from Netflix confirmed the project was not with them. A representative for Angel Studios confirmed, “A Week Away – The Series – will be an Angel Original series, meaning that it will be available exclusively on Angel.com and the Angel app.”

Additional details for the series are expected imminently.

Angel Studios is probably best known for the series The Chosen, which Netflix distributed the first season of for a couple of years until its global departure in November 2024.
