If you have ever wanted an excuse to dress up, wear a big hat, and spend a day watching horse racing with a lively crowd around you, Cinco de Derby is exactly that kind of event.

Think big derby hats, bold spring outfits, live horse racing, and a crowd that fully commits to the theme. It makes for the perfect family-friendly outing, with something happening at every point in the day, so there is never a dull moment.

Where racing meets full fiesta energy

Taking place on Saturday, May 2, at Century Downs, the event turns a regular race day into something more festive.

Things will kick off with live Standardbred horse racing at 12:45 p.m., which will set the pace for the afternoon.

From there, the day builds into one of Calgary’s most talked-about traditions, the 10th annual Chihuahua Races, and yes, it’s exactly what it sounds like: tiny dogs, sprinting down the track and completely stealing the show.

The Chihuahua Races are expected to start at 4:10 p.m., depending on the horse racing schedule that day, and they are easily the moment most people stay for. It’s adorable, chaotic, and somehow taken very seriously in the best way.

Between races, there is plenty happening to keep the energy going. Guests will have an opportunity to watch the Kentucky Derby coverage at 4:57 p.m., sample drinks from Born Brewing Co. between 1 p.m. and 3 p.m., browse the Parachute for Pets thrift setup, and enjoy giveaways from Airdrie Puppy Pals and Petland Canada!

Food and drink will also be available throughout the venue, with plenty of grab-and-go options and seasonal favourites. It’s all set up to keep things casual and enjoyable while you move between races and activities.

The best part about this event is that it’s family-friendly and free to enter, making it easy to spend a full day at the track. It’s recommended to arrive early to secure a good spot and take in all the action throughout the day. Free on-site parking will be available, and the venue is wheelchair-accessible, making it an easy and inclusive outing for all guests.

So if you have been waiting for an excuse to wear the perfect spring outfit, throw on a big hat, and spend the day at the track doing something a little different, this is it.
