Active travel company Backroads has released its forecast for 2025 travel trends based on early guest bookings. The trends span a range of travel styles, ages, and global locations.

The company anticipates a rise in women-only trips. Women’s Adventures Walking & Hiking Tours are expected to double in 2025 compared to 2024. Popular destinations include Ireland and the Camino de Santiago.

Challenging hikes in mountainous regions are also gaining interest. The company is witnessing a surge in bookings for alpine hiking tours in locations like Chile’s Patagonia, Italy’s Dolomites, Norway’s Lofoten Islands, and Peru.

While some travelers seek demanding hikes, others prefer a more leisurely pace. Destinations that offer relaxation, natural beauty, and cultural activities are becoming increasingly popular. Examples of such trips include the Canadian Rockies, Peru, Lapland, and the Austrian Alps.

The Madeira and Azores islands in Portugal are becoming popular due to their lush landscapes, dramatic coastlines, and beautiful beaches. Following enthusiastic guest interest, Backroads has doubled its departure dates for these locations in 2025.

Travelers also explore lesser-known destinations like Belfast, Newfoundland, the Baltics, and Tasmania. Furthermore, non-electric bike tours are attracting those who prefer traditional cycling experiences.

Astrotourism is another emerging trend, with travelers interested in stargazing, eclipse chasing, and glamping in locations like Utah’s Bryce and Zion National Parks.

France continues to be a top European travel destination, with Normandy, Brittany, the Loire Valley, and the Seine and Rhône Rivers attracting numerous tourists.

Winter travel is also heating up. Destinations offering winter wildlife viewing, snowshoeing, beach hikes, and coastal biking are becoming increasingly popular.

Lastly, travelers are prioritizing experiences over possessions. Itineraries that offer connections to nature, culture, and community are in demand.

Backroads’ CEO, Tom Hale, emphasizes that while trends change, the desire to explore new and inspiring places remains constant. The company aims to stay in tune with these changes to offer trips that meet their guests’ evolving preferences.
