When former SNL cast members return to host the sketch show, you can always expect some fun surprises, and Chris Rock’s episode this weekend certainly delivered on that front. Rock debuted killer jokes in his opening monologue and offered memorable performances in sketches throughout the night, but there was one skit in particular that we’ll be thinking about for weeks to come.

This week’s best sketch takes place in the surgical wing of a hospital where Rock performs gallbladder surgery on an unseen patient alongside fellow surgeons Bowen Yang, Ego Nowdim, and Emil Wakim. After the procedure is complete, however, they learn that they were meant to remove the patient’s appendix instead, a mistake made by a hapless nurse, Leslie, portrayed by Sarah Sherman. “Wait… are you guys mad at me?” she asks the group after her blunder is discovered. When they don’t answer her, Leslie’s antics only increase. “I’m feeling really anxious. Can I get a hug?” she asks, recklessly approaching the site of an active surgery. Rightfully, she is denied.

After more of Leslie’s missteps are found out (namely, dropping her AirPod inside the patient’s body and not giving them enough anesthesia), the body under the sheet rises, revealing one of SNL 50’s biggest cameos: Adam Sandler. The rest of the sketch is a series of prop misfires and line flubs, but the pure joy on the actor’s faces as the scene devolves into madness speaks to the magic of the show. One of the golden rules of comedy is “if the people on stage are having fun, the audience will have fun.” Well, that rule was in full effect during this truly off-the-rails scene.
