AI’s Role in Holiday Planning Doubles, Reflecting Shift in Travel Trends

The latest ABTA Holiday Habits 2025-26 report reveals significant shifts in how people plan their holidays, with a notable increase in the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) for travel inspiration. This change is part of broader trends that also include a rise in solo travel.

AI in Travel Planning

According to the ABTA report, the use of AI for holiday planning has doubled in the last year, from 4% to 8%. This growth is most pronounced among younger demographics, with 18% of 25–34-year-olds and 13% of 18–24-year-olds using AI to find travel inspiration. Despite the rise in digital tools, traditional methods such as internet searches (48%) and recommendations from friends and family (41%) remain popular. However, AI is expected to play an increasingly significant role, with 43% of respondents expressing confidence in AI tools for planning and 38% for booking holidays.

Solo Travel Trends

The report also highlights a surge in solo travel, with 19% of respondents having taken a holiday alone in the past year, the highest since ABTA began tracking this in 2014. The increase is driven by younger travelers, particularly those under 45 years old. Europe remains the top destination for solo travelers, with France being the most popular country among them. City breaks are the preferred type of solo travel, with 52% opting for short trips to major European cities.

Industry Perspectives

Mark Tanzer, ABTA Chief Executive, commented on the findings, emphasizing the commitment of individuals to their travel experiences, whether alone or in groups. He noted the dual trend of increasing solo travel and the use of AI, suggesting a shift towards more personalized and technologically integrated travel planning. Tanzer also highlighted the ongoing importance of personal touch and expertise provided by travel agents and tour operators.

The ABTA Holiday Habits 2025-26 report underscores a dynamic change in the travel industry, driven by technological advancements and evolving consumer preferences. As AI becomes a more common tool for holiday planning, the travel industry faces new opportunities and challenges in adapting to these trends.
