When you think of fossils that date back millions of years and cave exploration, you may not think of Ontario, but we assure you, this town has it! Eganville, Ont., is home to the Bonnechere Caves, an underground wonder that visitors from around the world come to explore.

The caves are found in Eganville, about four hours by car from Toronto and one hour by car from Ottawa.

There are different ways to see the caves: a self-guided, softly supervised tour for those who want to explore on their own and a traditional guided tour for anyone who wants to learn more about the cave’s history and how they were formed.

The tours last 20 to 30 minutes, and cost $15 for children and up to $25 per adult.

“We have been welcoming people from all over the world for over 55 years,” shares the Bonnechere Caves website.

“We provide a safe, educational, informative and fun tour for people of all ages. Everyone from babies in backpacks to senior citizens has enjoyed the handiwork of Mother Nature here.”

Once you’ve explored the underground caves, it’s time to check out some ancient fossils!

Eganville is home to fossils dating back to the Ordovician era, about 443.7 million years ago.

Ancient sea creatures are fossilized in the limestone that was once the mud at the bottom of oceans that covered the community’s land.

There are a couple of different ways you can check out the fossils for yourself, either at the Bonnechere Museum or on an organized Fossil Hunt with Caveman Chris.

Yep, there’s no shortage of adventure waiting for you in Eganville.
