Peterborough, Ont., is described as a “one-of-a-kind place, located on nature’s doorstep.” It’s an all-season adventure, but in the summer, it’s worth the short drive from the city for one special event — Lock & Paddle.

Next stop: Peterborough, Ont.

This July, one of Peterborough’s most iconic summer traditions is making a splash once again. The beloved Lock & Paddle event returns to the historic Peterborough Lift Lock on July 19, 2025, inviting canoeists and kayakers from across the region to experience a uniquely Canadian adventure.

Held on Canada’s Parks Day, this free, family-friendly event transforms the world’s highest hydraulic lift lock into a celebration of paddling, community, and heritage.

Hundreds of paddlers are expected to participate, many arriving with creatively decorated canoes and kayaks, ready to ascend the 65-foot Lift Lock in a stunning show of colour.

What should I bring?

According to Parks Canada, this is a rain or shine event. Be sure to dress for the weather. Oh, and bring a:

  • Canoe or kayak
  • Personal Flotation Devices (PFDs) for each paddler
  • Sound signalling device, buoyant heaving line, and bailer for each boat
  • Watertight flashlight
  • Sunscreen and a hat
  • Water bottle

If you don’t have your own gear but still want to participate, Parks Canada lists these local rental options:

Exploring history

The Peterborough Lift Lock, a National Historic Site since 1904, is an engineering marvel that offers a rare opportunity to connect with Canada’s past in an unforgettable way.

Floating up the lock alongside fellow enthusiasts, participants are immersed in a shared moment that blends outdoor fun with historic wonder.

Whether you’re a seasoned paddler or trying it for the first time, Lock & Paddle is a bucket-list experience for all.

While you’re in the area, why not explore the many trails and parks right within the city?

It’s also considered an easy access to cottage country and the lakes, too.

There’s lots to do, but this event is one you don’t want to miss.
