Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson’s bromance is well-known, and their chemistry was memorable on screen in the acclaimed first season of “True Detective.”
Now, in an interview on the podcast Let’s Talk Off Camera with Kelly Ripa, McConaughey suggests that he and Harrelson may actually be brothers.
“Where I start and where he ends, and where he starts and I end, it always seemed like a blurry line,” McConaughey said earlier this week.
“And that’s part of our bromance, isn’t it? My kids call him Uncle Woody. His kids call me Uncle Matthew, etc. What’s in my picture?” He’s the one.”
“A few years ago in Greece, we were talking about how close we were to our families,” McConaughey said. “And my mom was there and she was like, ‘Woody, I’m I knew your dad. It was loaded KNEW.”
“We figured out what this ‘knew’ meant and did some math and found that[Harrelson’s]father was going through a second divorce between my mother and father.” At the same time, I found out that I was on temporary leave. McConaughey added that the pair were “on the brink” of DNA testing to verify the suspicion, but more than Harrelson, he “had believed for 53 years” that his father might not be his biological parent. I was reluctant to do so if I discovered it afterward.
The pair appear in the comedy series Brother From Another Mother for Apple TV+, which fictionalizes their friendship.
The two actors first met in 1997 while working on Ron Howard’s “EDtv,” but they disagree about the exact moment.
“There was tequila involved,” McConaughey quipped in a video on his verified YouTube channel.
He first remembers meeting Harrelson at a costume fitting for “EDtv” in San Francisco. At the time, Harrelson was “walking down the streets of San Francisco in bike shorts and a pro bike top, still in pro bike riding shoes.”
Since then, McConaughey and Harrelson have co-starred in the films Surfer, Dude and True Detective.
