Incendiary Playwrights Initiative – Audition Call
Incendiary Festival is looking for actors for a workshop reading in the Playwrights Initiative. We have a workshop reading taking place in July/August.
The Initiative: The goal of this project is to give playwrights, actors, directors, and dramaturgs a chance to grow their skills, try something new, and make connections without the pressure or time commitment of a full production. We also want to connect with creatives who share our values and connect with our process for potential work on our full-scale projects in the future.
Throughout the season, we will be producing eleven readings of new works by Albertan playwrights. Each project is unique and focuses on experimenting with different storytelling styles. Depending on the show, preparations for the reading will include anywhere from one to four rehearsal dates, culminating in a performance to remember. Rehearsals and Performance will be selected based on the chosen cast’s availability.
Whether you’ve always wanted to try your hand at acting but never have, or are looking for the perfect bite-sized project to fill out your packed schedule, this is an opportunity to try something new and connect with other creatives.
Incendiary Festival is incredibly passionate about working with performers of all ages, body types, ethnicities, and with folks with disabilities. If you are interested in the projects, we are interested in seeing you. Period.

Project:
Arsenic by Jade Bartlett
DESCRIPTION: A fusion of the Biblical and the Mythological, Arsenic is a feminist retelling of the Book of Genesis. In the Garden of Eden, Medusa emboldens Eve to eat the forbidden fruit in order to liberate herself from the throes of patriarchy, the abusive “father” who invented it, and the men who are complicit in its perpetuation.
CHARACTERS:
EVE – She/Her; those eighteen to those in their mid-twenties; any ethnicity Although naive at times, EVE is stubborn–a force to be reckoned with, especially when she comes into her power.
MEDUSA – She/Her; those in their thirties to those in their fifties; any ethnicity MEDUSA is not the monster she has been made out to be. Rather, she is a wise teacher; a nurturing mother figure; and, above all else, a ferocious feminist. Although a grounded woman, she is also not afraid to be vulnerable with her emotions.
ENSEMBLE – Looking for three individuals of any gender identity, any age, and any ethnicity ENSEMBLE members are mischievous antagonists of the patriarchy. However, they are not always as grounded as Medusa who, at times, must remind them of the following: in order to practice true feminism, they must also support women’s wrongs.
Compensation: Incendiary Festival operates under a profit-share model. This means we can not guarantee compensation, as the profit is never guaranteed. However, we do everything we can to ensure our projects fit around your other commitments and are rewarding in other ways.
