Incendiary Playwrights Initiative – Audition Call
Incendiary Festival is looking for actors for a workshop reading in the Playwrights Initiative. We have a workshop reading of a new play taking place in November.
The Initiative: The goal of this project is to give playwrights, actors, directors, and dramaturgs a chance to grow their skills, try something new, and make connections without the pressure or time commitment of a full production. We also want to connect with creatives who share our values and connect with our process for potential work on our full-scale projects in the future.
Throughout the season, we will be producing eleven readings of new works by Albertan playwrights. Each project is unique and focuses on experimenting with different storytelling styles. Depending on the show, preparations for the reading will include anywhere from one to four rehearsal dates, culminating in a performance to remember.
Whether you’ve always wanted to try your hand at acting but never have, or are looking for the perfect bite-sized project to fill out your packed schedule, this is an opportunity to try something new and connect with other creatives.
Incendiary Festival is incredibly passionate about working with performers of all ages, body types, ethnicities, and with folks with disabilities. If you are interested in the projects, we are interested in seeing you. Period.

Play Summary:
Photojournalist turned accountant, Veronica, stares down the same cancer that killed her mother and a 50th birthday spent alone because her ex won’t switch weekends with their 16-year-old daughter, Adelaide. When Adelaide announces she’s failing the Bio she needs to get into university, so she has a make-up project on climate change, Veronica skips dropping Adelaide at her dad’s and heads for Churchill. While avoiding her biopsy and bagging a photo of a polar bear to win a National Geographic contest this time around, Veronica teaches her daughter a few things she wished her mother had found the time to. Adelaide learns: to drive, the virtue of waiting to lose her virginity, about the Women’s March and the camaraderie of friends in pussy hats, not to get between a mother polar bear and her cub, that Huskies aren’t pets, and her mother is much more than she failed to notice. Veronica learns to put her divorce to rest, online date, embrace her passion for art and life, and that her stubborn teenaged daughter needs her just as much as Veronica needed her mother.
Character Descriptions:
Adelaide (Addy): 16-year-old high school student who lives with her mother Veronica but spends every other weekend with her dad and his second wife. Loves animals, not driving, wants to be a Zoologist. Likes boys but not sex yet. Tall, pretty and independent if insecure. Struggling in Bio class and weary of her mother’s suffocating love but also worried about her dad’s new family. Her favourite catch phrase is ‘as if’ with an eye roll.
Veronica (Nic): 50-year-old photojournalist turned accountant, divorced mother to 16-year-old, Adelaide. Still mad at her ex. After a cancer scare, she’s worried she won’t live long enough to teach Adelaide all Veronica’s mother missed passing onto her. Overprotective but means well. Needs to get a life outside her client’s tax returns and her daughter. Wants to bag a photo of a polar bear to win a photo contest this time after coming in second.
Bryce: Veronica’s ex, Adelaide’s dad. Lawyer married to Addy’s former dance instructor Marcy. Denies affair but not the need for someone to pay attention to him since Veronica turned from an exciting photojournalist into a boring mom. Matt Damon lookalike with a penchant for letting his daughter do whatever she wants. A-type but loves Adelaide fiercely and only wants to protect her even if it’s from herself and Veronica. Wants Veronica and Adelaide to accept his new family.
Cop: Young cadet stripping to pay the bills. Boy Scout with a sense of humour and duty. He matches with Veronica on the dating app but is young enough to be her son.
Julie: Sassy and independent middle-aged woman who brought her mom to the Women’s March. Welcomes Veronica and Adelaide into her squatter’s village tent. Helps Veronica set up an online dating profile and celebrate her birthday.
Anne: Julie’s 70s mother. Enjoying freedom and feminism later in life. Reprimands Adelaide for her snippy attitude towards her mother Veronica. Hires the stripper for Veronica’s birthday.
Gavin: Strapping Scotsman with a heart of gold encased in a chest of muscle. Teased for being too pretty when he shaves, he usually has facial hair or scruff. Watches reruns of 90210. Wears a kilt even in Churchill in winter. Raises Huskies and lives out of town since he likes dogs more than people. Matched with Veronica on the dating app and would happily buy her a beer not an overpriced latte.
Compensation: Incendiary Festival operates under a profit-share model. This means we can not guarantee compensation, as the profit is never guaranteed. However, we do everything we can to ensure our projects fit around your other commitments and are rewarding in other ways.
