Character Breakdown
ACTOR 1: Adult Alex (actor) & Child Alex (puppet) – Age range: Any adult; Any Gender
• Adult Alex: professional telegraph operator, storyteller; inventive, open and wise.
• Child Alex: puppet. Non-verbal. Navigating trauma and loss of their father. Finds interest and passion in invention and inspiration from the visiting inventor.
ACTOR 2: Nan, KempPaget – Age range: 40’s and up; Female Identifying
• Nan: Grandmother to Alex. Protective, hardworking, caring, sometimes gruff and no nonsense.
• KempPaget: Assistant to Marconi. Clown, tries hard, makes mistakes, earnest and fumbling.
ACTOR 3: Marconi, Father Gregory, Mr. Powell, Hatter Pete – Age range: Any adult; Any Gender
• Marconi: spirited inventor, adventurous, daring, bold, and creative, at times firm and determined, kind and open to Alex
• Father Gregory: Principal of Alex’s school. Uptight and always attempting to control and uphold rules
• Mr. Powell: Hotel owner. Very noisy and spreads rumours, starstruck by Marconi.
• Hatter Pete: Seer who speaks in riddles and tongues. Wears three hats and is thought to be mad.

The deadline for submissions is Thursday, May 15, 2025 at 5:00 pm.
Candidates will be auditioning for Nikki Loach, Artistic Director of Quest Theatre, and Jennie Esdale the Director of Whispers in the Air. In-person auditions will take place on Monday, May 26, 2025. Candidates will be granted an audition based on their submission material and will be asked to prepare the following:
1. Audition sides supplied by Quest Theatre when given an audition.
2. The task of manipulating a puppet unknown to the candidate and provided at the audition.
Submissions are open to Equity and Non-Equity artists. We are currently only considering submissions from Calgary based artists. As Quest Theatre is a professional touring company, artists must perform during the day and cannot be enrolled as full or part-time students as of January 2026.
Quest encourages all artists to explore theatre for young audiences as part of their ongoing practice. We are open to inspiration from any artist who is passionate about sharing their love of theatre with young people. We welcome artists of all races, ethnicities, genders, sexual orientations, religious affiliations, and abilities, as these represent the audience we serve. Quest Theatre is a member of the Professional Association of Canadian Theatres and operates within the jurisdiction of the Canadian Theatre Agreement. Successful candidates will be engaged under an Equity contract.
