The Internet broke on Tuesday when Taylor Swift announced that she and her longtime partner, Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce, were engaged.
The Grammy-winning singer posted this incredible news via Instagram, where she shared five photos from the engagement on Tuesday afternoon, captioning them, “Your English teacher and your gym teacher are getting married 🧨,” along with her own song, “So High School,” as the chosen audio.
The couple started dating in the summer of 2023, when the NFL athlete revealed he had tried to give Swift a friendship bracelet with his number on it at her Eras Tour. Shortly after, the two were spotted together, sparking relationship rumors that quickly became reality.
Since then, the 35-year-old singer was frequently seen cheering at Chiefs games, while Kelce supported her on tour. Though they did their best to keep their relationship private, they were spotted together on dates multiple times around New York City, Philadelphia and around Florida these past few months, as well as at a wedding in Nashville this past June.
Many fans and friends of the couple reacted to the news, including singer Avril Lavigne.
Minutes after Swift posted the engagement, the “Girlfriend” singer reposted the photos on her Instagram story with the caption “Awww huge congratulations to @taylorswift and @killatrav” written in orange, which could allude to Swift’s upcoming studio album, The Life of a Showgirl.

For years, the two have shared a positive friendship. Back in 2015, the “Cruel Summer” singer invited Lavigne to join her on stage and sing her hit song “Complicated” at the San Diego stop of Swift’s 1989 World Tour. In 2022, Lavigne admitted to PEOPLEthat Swift sent her flowers and a sweet note to celebrate the Canadian singer’s release of her seventh studio album, Love Sux.
Lavigne rose to fame in the early 2000s with her debut album Let Go in 2002, featuring hits like “Complicated” and “Sk8er Boi,” which defined her as the “pop-punk princess.” Known for her edgy style and rebellious spirit, she released multiple platinum albums, including Under My Skin and Goodbye Lullaby. Over two decades, she’s sold millions worldwide, influenced a generation of artists and still remains a major figure in pop-punk and alternative rock. More recently, she released a collaboration with Simple Plan titled “Young & Dumb” in May and just wrapped the North American leg of her Greatest Hits Tour.
On top of wedding planning, Swift is currently pushing and advertising her 12th studio album, The Life of a Showgirl, which is set to drop on October 3.
