Bella Ramsay recently revealed a new clinical diagnosis—and it was actually a crew member from The Last of Us who pointed out the signs.

In a March 19 article from British Vogue, the 21-year-old nonbinary actress opened up about receiving an autism diagnosis while filming the HBO series.

“I’ve spoken a bit about neurodivergence before, but I always for some reason didn’t want to say what it was,” Ramsey told the publication. “I got diagnosed with autism when I was filming Season 1 of The Last of Us.”

Evidently, a crew member with an autistic daughter assumed they had it, prompting Ramsey to seek out a clinical autism assessment. They told British Vogue that they have felt like a “loner” and a “weirdo.” Additionally, they detailed experiencing sensory issues, along with a “painful hyperawareness of other people’s micro-expressions and body language.”

Upon confirming their autism diagnosis, Ramsey said the knowledge was “freeing.”

“It enables me to walk through the world with more grace towards myself about not being able to do the easy everyday tasks that everyone else seems to be able to do,” they explained.

Ramsey added, “I’ve always been watching and learning from people,” they continued. “Having to learn more manually how to socialise and interact with the people around me has helped me with acting.”

In January 2023, Ramsey came out as non-binary and gender fluid during an interview with The New York Times.

“I’m very much just a person,” she told the publication. “Being gendered isn’t something that I particularly like, but in terms of pronouns, I really couldn’t care less.”

Season 2 of The Last of Us premieres on April 13 at 9 p.m. ET on HBO, also available for streaming on Max.
