Awards season has arrived at Netflix. The two major new titles hitting the streamer in November have already been tipped as potential Oscar contenders: French filmmaker Jacques Audiard’s bold transgender drug cartel thriller-musical Emilia Pérez and Malcolm Washington’s stirring adaptation of August Wilson’s Pulitzer-winning play, The Piano Lesson. But there are plenty of other, perhaps more frivolously fun movies and shows arriving this month, including a conspiracy thriller limited series starring Colman Domingo, the second part of the final season of cult hit Cobra Kai and a film in which Party of Five’s Lacey Chabert dates a hunky snowman. Wait, what?

Emilia Pérez

Filling the Baz Luhrmann role in this year’s Oscar race, Jacques Audiard’s potential Best Picture contender is ambitious, audacious and sure to be polarising. Zoe Saldaña is a lawyer strong-armed into helping a trans cartel boss (Karla Sofía Gascón) arrange gender-affirming surgery and go into hiding. Did we mention it’s also a musical?

Hot Frosty

Halloween is over, so here come the Christmas movies. The title sounds like a made-up sex act your eighth-grade classmate convinced you was real, and the plot is a little porn-adjacent as well: a young widow (Lacey Chabert) brings a snowman to life, transforming him into Schitt’s Creek hunk Dustin Milligan. Will they engage in any onscreen hot frosties? Tune in!

Cobra Kai season 6, part 2

The Karate Kid spinoff series gets one crane-kick closer to the end. Netflix is doling out its final season in three five-episode chunks, following former rivals Daniel-san and Johnny Lawrence to a major karate tournament in Spain, where they unexpectedly encounter a mutual enemy. Who will ultimately prove to be the best… a-roooounnnd?

Netflix dips its toes into the live sports arena with an event that’s less a boxing exhibition than a freakshow. Who do you got: the 27-year-old YouTuber or the 58-year-old with ulcer issues? Hey, it’s possible someone leaves the ring grievously injured or missing an ear, and you don’t want to miss that, right?

Joy

Republicans made in vitro fertilisation a wedge issue this election cycle, so it’s good timing for a biographical drama about the world’s first ‘test tube baby’. Bill Nighy, James Norton and Thomasin McKenzie play the trio of medical professionals who pioneered the science, while Jack Thorne and Rachel Mason’s emotional script underscores the human element of their rather miraculous breakthrough.

The Piano Lesson

Malcolm ‘Son of Denzel’ Washington makes his directorial debut with this August Wilson adaptation, which uses a sibling dispute over a century-old heirloom to trace the history of an African-American family circa the Depression. Samuel L Jackson, Danielle Deadwyler and Malcolm’s brother, John David Washington, star. Save your nepo-baby cracks: word out of the festivals is placing the film in early Oscar conversations.

The Madness

A white supremacist is found dead in the Poconos. Well, that’s a shame. The problem? The person who finds him is media pundit Muncie Daniels, who ends up framed for his murder. Recent Academy Award nominee Colman Domingo stars in this tense, twisty, politically-charged miniseries.

Senna

Ayrton Senna was Brazil’s most famous Formula 1 driver, who won three world championships before dying in a crash in 1994, aged 34. Unfamiliar with him? This fast and furious series covers his life and career, with Ferrari’s Gabriel Leone portraying the charismatic speedster.
