White died at age 99 on Dec. 31, 2021 following a cerebrovascular accident, also known as a stroke. She passed away just weeks before what would have been her 100th birthday on Jan. 17.
“An icon of American television, Betty White (1922–2021) shared her wit and warmth with viewers for seven decades,” the USPS said in announcement posted online. “The comedic actor, who gained younger generations of fans as she entered her 90s, was also revered as a compassionate advocate for animals.”
The USPS also shared a first look at White’s stamp, which features a smiling photo of the Mary Tyler Moore Show alum with an elegant purple background. It was designed by Boston-based artist Dale Stephanos who created the digital illustration based on a 2010 photograph taken by Kwaku Alston.

Fans were instantly moved by the posthumous tribute in White’s honor. One user on X (formerly Twitter), replied to the announcement by writing, “YES!! Now THAT’S some news we could all use.”
“I definitely will be buying a book of them,” someone else vowed, adding, “Who couldn’t love the lady?”
Someone else said White is “more than deserving of the honor.”
While “Forever USA” is on all the forever stamps, it’s an especially appropriate phrase to read under Betty’s lovely face,” one person wrote.
