If you’ve noticed Brooke Shields’ hair looking especially great lately—shiny, healthy and bouncy—there’s a good reason. The 59-year-old model and actress quietly launched her haircare brand Commence in June 2024 with three products, and has since rolled out three more. The line was made for the specific biological challenges women over 40 face, including thinning hair, brittleness, a lack of shine and a dry, irritated scalp.

“I learned from the Commence community that a huge part of a woman’s identity was affected by their hair changing over 40,” Shields said in a recent Mother’s Day Zoom event with her daughters, Rowan and Grier. “They asked me to research and help solve this individual problem.”

The brand features the Commence Complex, which is infused with peptides, pre- and post-biotics, plant stem cells and alfalfa sprout extract. It works to support hair growth, volume and a healthy scalp. “To look at your scalp as skin is so important,” Shields said. “We only focus on the part we see—hair, which starts at the root. If you want the healthiest hair, treat it starting from the root.”

Although Commence was made specifically for more mature hair, Shields said her daughters and their friends love it too. “Even though the Commence products are not intended or marketed to younger generations, my girls and their friends love them, even for preventative measures,” she said. “Some of my favorite memories with my girls had to deal with their scalp and hair; they could be fussy, and I could run my hands through their scalp, which was so calming to them,” she continued. “There has always been a real connection in hair.”
