Even before it was one of the coolest destinations in Calgary, Inglewood was an important place to meet, sell, walk and connect.

Located at the confluence of the Bow and Elbow Rivers, the city’s oldest neighbourhood has a rich and incredible history that pre-dates 1875, when Calgary was founded.

It was always a gathering place

Originally the cherished home of the Blackfoot Nation, this still-bustling area, was a popular place for visiting and trading buffalo robes and fur.

Following the arrival of the NorthWest Mounted Police, The Hudson’s Bay Company built the Bow River Post and “East Calgary” was established with a number of one-room log houses built by Métis employees

As it grew, it attracted several people across Canada, including Colonel James Walker (who the community was named for), Louis Roselle, Captain Cecil Denny, and the talented architects who built the Burn Block and East Calgary Telephone Exchange.

By 1914, 400 residential, institutional, and commercial buildings were built, and much later, nearby hotspots such as St. Patrick’s Island and the Calgary Zoo were also established.

Flash forward and Inglewood has become the perfect blend of old and new, with many places that were built before our time, transformed into trendy bars, quirky shops and local restaurants.

With a village charm and respect for what came before, it’s no surprise that it’s been described by Tourism Calgary as “one of its coolest” neighbourhoods.

Don’t agree?

It was also designated Canada’s Greatest Community in 2014 by the Canadian Institute of Planners.
