Swamp Rat Experience, a non-profit community theatre, is producing The Lion and the Jewel written by Wole Soyinka at King Street Theatre (9803 King Street, Fort McMurray, AB) culminating in three performances February 19, 20 and 21, 2026, including a talk-back session.
All Swamp Rat Experience productions, events, and programs shall be conducted in accordance with safety protocols, mutual respect, and in the spirit of reconciliation.
Role as the Costume Designer
Responsible for designing, sourcing, building, and maintaining all costumes that support the production’s period and cultural context within the budget.
Key Responsibilities
Develop cohesive costume concepts and create costume plots and sketches
Produce measurement charts and oversee fittings and alterations
Source and build costumes with attention to period and cultural specificity
Ensure mobility for choreography and adapt designs for movement
Plan and manage quick changes, maintenance, and onstage costume operations during the run
Collaborate with the director, designers, technical team, and cast
Attend design meetings, rehearsals, tech week, and all performances as required
Commitment and Schedule
Work includes design meetings, tech week, and rehearsals as required; attendance at a minimum of weekly production meetings during the design and build phases and full availability for tech rehearsals and performances, as well as post-production. Rehearsals begin January 6, 2026 (full production schedule available at swampratexperience.com/lion-and-jewel).
Compensation
Honorarium (including GST): $1,000
Materials budget provided.
