Whether or not you’re a collector, it’s hard not to get into the festive spirit with the latest $2 coin shaped like a popular character from a beloved ballet.

The Royal Canadian Mint’s newest release is sure to spread some Christmas cheer: a toonie in the shape of The Nutcracker’s Sugar Plum Fairy.

The mint previously released other coins from The Nutcracker series, including the soldier, Clara and the Mouse King, all of which have now sold out. The Sugar Plum Fairy is the newest and final addition to this enchanting set.

“The character of the Sugar Plum Fairy is known around the world thanks to her captivating solo performance impeccably timed to Tchaikovsky’s celebrated composition The Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy,” reads the website.

“Beautiful, loyal and kind, the Sugar Plum Fairy reigned over the Prince’s wintery kingdom, populated by candies and sweets, after a magical spell transformed him into a wooden nutcracker soldier.”

The coin weighs 1 oz and is made with 99.9 per cent pure silver. The reverse features the character wearing a pink dress and matching ballet shoes, while her purple fairy wings certainly add a touch of magic. The obverse includes a portrait of the late Queen Elizabeth.

It retails for $149.95 and has a limited mintage of only 2,500. It’s encased in a booklet with details about the popular fictional character. The Sugar Plum Fairy coin will also come with a custom-made ornament-style capsule, making it easy to hang or display.

Shipping starts November 20, which is hopefully enough time to make it in time for the holidays and adorn mantles and Christmas trees across Canada.
