If you’re out of Valentine’s Day gift ideas, the Mint has released a new collectible coin that’s likely better than flowers and chocolates.

Romance is in the air with the Love is Precious coin, which features a colourful tropical design.

“This beautiful Love is Precious — Macaw 1 oz. Silver Coin features two macaws, representing lovers, surrounded by vibrant flowers in colour,” reads the website. “Between them is a red heart-shaped cubic zirconia, set into the coin. Around the edge, the inscription ‘Love is Precious’ is finely engraved into an ornate border.”

The other side of the coin features an effigy of King Charles III. It measures 40 mm in diameter, weighs 31.39 g and is made with 99.9 per cent pure silver.

The coin is worth $2 NZ or $1.63 CAD. The New Zealand Mint produced it for Niue, a small self-governing island state in free association with New Zealand in the South Pacific Ocean with a population of around 2,000.

And because presentation matters, the Love is Precious coin comes in a graphic beauty box adorned with macaws.

You might want to get your hands on this coin soon, as there are only 3,000 available worldwide. There’s limited availability in stores, but you can purchase it online. According to the website, the coin retails for $149.95. Shipping starts on February 12.

The Mint has released some pretty unique new designs recently, such as the hefty Big Silver Maple Leaf, a gigantic $1,000 CAD coin that weighs 10 kilograms or as much as three Canadian infants.

There’s also the 2025 Fine Silver Commemorating Black History collector coin, which celebrates Hogan’s Alley, a Black community that thrived in Vancouver’s Strathcona neighbourhood until the early 1970s.
