Like the rest of the world, Chris Martin isn’t done joking about Coldplay’s viral Jumbotron moment. And this time, it was during a fan’s proposal at the band’s Friday, August 22 show in London.
The seven-time Grammy-winning group — who has been on their Music of theSpheres world tour — played the first night of their Wembley run on Friday, during which an audience member held up a large sign that read, “I want to propose to her,” with an arrow pointing down at his girlfriend.
The hyped couple were featured on the Jumbotron — but before he let the man propose, Martin told him he had to do some “basic security checks.”
“Is this, firstly, your partner? No one else’s partner?” the “Fix You” singer quipped, as the boyfriend nodded his head yes and the girl put her hands over her mouth.
“Are you cousins, or siblings, or anything like that?” Martin continued, leaning into the bit even more. “Are you AI — are you real, are you real people?”

After giving the couple his OK, Martin sang some advice to the man.
“Listen, my brother, here is some advice for free,” the “Speed of Sound” singer crooned. “As we all look around / and see you get down / I’d advise you to get down on one knee.”
Needless to say, the fan followed suit. His girlfriend — now fiancée — gave him an enthusiastic yes, and the pair sealed the deal with a kiss.
Coldplay made headlines around the world immediately following their July 16 show in Foxborough, Massachusetts, when the Jumbotron caught Astronomer CEO Andy Byron cozied up to the company’s head of HR, Kristin Cabot, while each married to their respective spouses. Due to the co-workers’ reaction to being caught on the big screen — Byron got wide-eyed and tried to dodge the camera, while Cabot immediately turned around — Martin quipped that the two might be having an affair.

The video of the moment instantly went super viral. No one could make memes fast enough. Martin’s ex-wife, Gwyneth Paltrow, even appeared in an ad for Astronomer in a tongue-in-cheek move by the company.
Both Byron and Cabot resigned following the incident.
“The events of the past few days have received a level of media attention that few companies — let alone startups in our small corner of the data and AI world — ever encounter,” interim CEO Pete DeJoy wrote in a LinkedIn post following the kiss cam incident. “The spotlight has been unusual and surreal for our team and, while I would never have wished for it to happen like this, Astronomer is now a household name.”
Martin, for his part, has made numerous jokes about the drama in the weeks since the scandal — but he also made sure to wish both Byron and Cabot well.
“We send pure love to those people,” he said at one of Coldplay’s shows last week.
