IHG Hotels & Resorts and GI Capital Management have commenced construction of the Regent Kyoto, scheduled to open in 2028.

The recent groundbreaking event for the Regent Kyoto marks the beginning of construction for a new luxury hotel in Kyoto, Japan. The hotel, a collaboration between IHG Hotels & Resorts and GI Capital Management, is expected to open in 2028. Located in the affluent Okazaki area of Kyoto, known for its historic villas and cultural sites, the Regent Kyoto will feature 83 rooms.

The property is designed around a central garden originally landscaped by renowned landscape gardener Kumakichi Kato over a century ago. This garden has been redesigned to blend modern luxury with historical elements, reflecting the hotel’s commitment to integrating architectural heritage with contemporary design. The hotel will also include a ‘ryotei’ restaurant that has a century long history with the premises originally developed and later used as accommodation and a dining venue for esteemed guests including the Japanese nobles and imperial family and state guests visiting the city.

The Regent Kyoto is strategically located near several key cultural landmarks, including the Kyoto Imperial Palace, Heian Shrine, and Nanzen-ji Temple, making it a potentially attractive destination for travelers seeking luxury accommodations close to significant historical sites. The guest rooms will offer a modern interpretation of the traditional ‘engawa’ zone, a space by the window designed to connect guests with the surrounding gardens and natural environment.

Currently, IHG operates 54 hotels across Japan under 10 different brands, with an additional 17 hotels in the pipeline.
