The last thing anyone needs while in search of their favorite groceries is to discover that one or more items have been removed from shelves entirely. In recent months, Costco has issued a number of product recalls that, while entirely necessary from a health risk standpoint, have left membership holders with a bad taste in their mouths. And to make matters even worse, a year-round fan-favorite bakery item has just been named as the latest Costco product experiencing potential contamination due to “foreign materials.”
In a letter sent to members on November 9, Costco officials announced a recall for its Kirkland Signature Butter Croissants, citing their potential contamination with foreign materials. To help smooth over the shock of contaminated food, Costco is not only swiftly removing the butter croissants from bakery shelves nationwide, but the popular bulk retailer is offering refunds to customers who purchased them as well.

As can be expected, news of the recall has spread online like wildfire, with shoppers taking to Reddit to report the total disappearance of butter croissants. One Redditor who was initially unaware of the recall wrote,
“My local Costco did not have croissants yesterday or today. When I asked I was told no croissants till further notice. No explanation. Weird.”

While others were just as much in the dark on the matter as the author of the Reddit post, one commenter chimed in to offer some potential clarity,
“It’s part of the salt recall. Apparently a salt supplier had some metal shavings in their salt, so a lot of Costco products are on hold until they get new supply.”
The insightful commenter goes on to suggest that the Canadian salt issues could potentially be impacting the U.S. market as well, citing this article on the matter in the process.

The recall specifically impacts the 12-pack containers of butter croissants with sell by dates ranging between September 8 and November 10 of this year. As of now, no immediate health issues have been reported in relation to the recall, though Costco still instructs shoppers with any questions to contact Costco at (800) 955-2292 between 5 a.m. and 8 p.m. PT, Monday through Friday. In addition, a full refund will be made available to those who return the croissants to their local warehouse.
