Four people are dead in a multi-car crash west of Phoenix on Interstate 10.

According to Arizona DPS, the crash happened around 1 p.m. near milepost 89 and involved multiple semi-trucks, among other vehicles.

What we know:

The Arizona Fire & Medical Authority said that more than 20 units responded to the crash and two patients were flown via helicopter to the hospital.

Another six were taken to the hospital via ambulance and three were pronounced dead on the scene.

An additional person was pronounced dead later by DPS. 

Timeline:

Both directions of the main horizontal freeway were closed for an initial investigation at Mile Post 88, near Salome Road.

Westbound traffic reopened around 3:35 p.m.

Eastbound traffic was closed for more than 10 hours with miles of cars lined up behind the scene of the crash with nowhere to go.

Warren Trent with Arizona DPS said the site would take an additional two-to-four hours to clear up as of 10:00 p.m.

What we don’t know:

We are still waiting for the cause of the crash. There was a significant dust storm in the area, but visibility has not been listed as a factor in the crash.
