It’s undeniable that Cyberpunk 2077 has fully rebounded from its rocky launch at this point, as CD Projekt Red recently confirmed that the RPG surpassed a stunning sales milestone.
As of July 3, 2026, the game has sold over 40 million copies. CD Projekt Red celebrated that on X, with a post from Michał Nowakowski proudly stating that it “shows the incredible, lasting strength of Cyberpunk 2077 and is a testament to what CD Projekt does best – creating high-quality, immersive stories that keep players returning for years.”
While it hasn’t quite reached the heights of Terraria, Grand Theft Auto 5, or CD Projekt Red’s own The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, Cyberpunk 2077 is still one of 23 games known to have sold over 40 million copies. It’s also quite a success story considering the sorry state the game launched in back in December 2020.
At release, Cyberpunk 2077 was riddled with bugs and lacked many features that had been promised pre-release. Rather than abandoning the game, CD Projekt Red continually updated and improved it over several years, culminating in 2023’s beloved Phantom Liberty expansion. Although Nowakowski recently said he doesn’t think the studio has fully redeemed itself from Cyberpunk 2077‘s rocky launch yet, it has clearly still done enough to attract many enthusiastic players.
CD Projekt Red is also committed to Cyberpunk as a franchise, as a full sequel to Cyberpunk 2077 is in the works and a trading card game and second season of the Netflix anime Edgerunners are on the way. Even Nowakowski’s statement about passing this sales milestone promotes Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 and states that Cyberpunk 2077 offered “a great foundation for our upcoming projects in this universe.”
Now that the first game has sold over 40 million copies, don’t expect the franchise to be going away anytime soon. If you haven’t played it, Cyberpunk 2077 is available on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, and Nintendo Switch 2.
