In 2006, 24th Street Theatre began producing a neighborhood Dia de los Muertos street festival. It started small—just in our parking lot—and has steadily grown year after year, first taking over the theater, then 24th Street and now 4 blocks of Hoover and the surrounding streets. Since its inception, this party has highlighted the spirit of the community and the vibrant neighborhood of North University Park. November 2020 was the first time in 14 years that the streets were quiet, there were no dancing chinelos, no food vendors cooking up tamales and quesadillas, and no painted faces. Instead, while staying home and keeping safe, our community enjoyed the first digital festival. It was a balm in the darkest time many have had in our lives. While physically apart, we celebrated the joy and memory of loved ones from our computer screens.

Now, in 2021, while the pandemic still touches all of our lives, our world has started to return. Armed with masks and incredible life-saving vaccines, we are hugging family members, reuniting with friends, and gathering together—in person—once again.

Join us for the 15th annual and triumphant return of the Dia de los Muertos block party, live and in-person on November 1, 6-10pm. Headlined by Mexican composer and rock star Jaime López, enjoy performances on the outdoor stage by Klezmer Juice, nueva trova musician/activist Esteban León, cumbia band Gabriel y La Verdad, Mariachi Calilajara, Aztec dance troupe Huitzilopochtli and ballet folklórico Sol de Fuego. Come early to watch the procession led by ceremonial dancers Los Chinelos.

Don’t forget to wear costumes and masks, both medical and celebratory! Enjoy the most authentic Dia de los Muertos festival in all of Los Angeles. Honor the dead by coming together safely to celebrate the beauty of life. See you here.
