If you’ve shopped at Dollarama over the past few years, you might be eligible for a payout from a $2.6 million class action settlement— but the deadline to file your claim is fast approaching.

Back in December, the Quebec Superior Court approved the settlement against the Canadian store, even though Dollarama denies any wrongdoing. The agreement covers a range of purchases made between 2019 and 2023.

The lawsuit alleges that Dollarama charged undisclosed or excessive Environmental Handling Fees (EHFs) on certain products, including batteries, electronics, and toys containing batteries.

While Dollarama denies any wrongdoing, a settlement has been approved, and eligible shoppers can now claim their share.

You may be eligible for a payout if you purchased a product with eco fees from Dollarama in Quebec between December 11, 2019 and July 4, 2023. For the rest of Canada, that period is May 29, 2021, to July 4, 2023.

The deadline to submit a claim is February 14, 2025, and each claimant can only submit one form, regardless of how many affected items they purchased. No proof of purchase is required.

Eligible individuals are expected to receive between $3 and $10 via Interac e-transfer, but the exact amount will depend on the total number of claims submitted. If the number of claims exceeds a certain threshold, no money will be paid out, and instead, the funds will be donated to court-approved charities.

Additionally, each person can only receive one Interac transfer, even if they bought multiple items subject to the eco fee during the covered period.

To receive compensation, claimants must have a valid email address and a bank account that can accept Interac e-transfers, as this is the only payment method available. Once the payment is sent, it must be claimed within 30 days, or it will expire.

The process is quick and free, so if you think you’re eligible, don’t wait. Visit the official settlement website to file your claim before the deadline arrives next month.

Despite agreeing to the settlement, Dollarama continues to deny any liability and maintains that it has not engaged in any wrongdoing.
