Actress Nathalie Baye, known for her roles in Downton Abbey: A New Era and Catch Me If You Can, died at 77 after a battle with dementia.
The star’s family confirmed to French news agency AFP that she died at her home in Paris on Friday evening from a form of dementia, BBC stated.
With more than 80 films under her belt, the French cinema legend was a beloved staple of film who left her mark on American audiences with several memorable roles.

Who Did Nathalie Baye Play in Downton Abbey?
Baye starred in Downton Abbey: A New Era, the 2022 film that followed the iconic TV series. She played Madame Montmirail, a French aristocratic widow whose late husband was a friend of Violet Crawley. Back in 2022, Baye smiled alongside her co-stars to promote the film.

In addition to her role in the Downton film, Baye starred alongside Leonardo DiCaprio in the beloved 2002 film Catch Me If You Can. Directed by Steven Spielberg, the film follows DiCaprio’s character as he plays a con artist who attempts to outsmart FBI agent Carl Hanratty, played by Tom Hanks. Baye played DiCaprio’s mother in the film.

Baye Was a French Cinema Icon
While American audiences largely knew Baye for her role in the Downton film, she was a staple of French cinema thanks to films like Every Man for Himself, Strange Affair, La Balance, and The Young Lieutenant. She racked up four wins at the Césars, which are largely considered to be France’s equivalent of the Oscars.
French President Emmanuel Macron made a statement upon the news of her death. Translated from French, the touching statement honored her legacy in French cinema.
“We loved Nathalie Baye so much. She accompanied, through her voice, her smiles, and her reserve, these last decades of French cinema, from François Truffaut to Tonie Marshall. An actress with whom we loved, dreamed, and grew up. We think of her family and her loved ones,” Macron wrote.
