A tragic incident occurred this morning at approximately 8:45 a.m. on Bloor Street West near Queen’s Park, when the driver of a large dump truck crashed into a person riding a bicycle resulting in the death of the female cyclist.

This is the fifth cyclist to die on Toronto streets this year, already surpassing the total of the previous four years.

The collision happened near the intersection of Bloor Street West and Avenue Road, close to the Royal Ontario Museum. Witnesses reported that the cyclist was struck on the road and was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency responders.

The Toronto Police Service’s 53 Division confirmed the fatality and has closed Bloor Street West in both directions from Avenue Road to Bay Street. The public is advised to avoid the area as the investigation continues.

Eyewitnesses on Reddit described the scene as shocking and expressed concern over the presence of large vehicles, such as dump trucks, on city streets.

One witness, identified as bellsbliss, noted the truck’s inability to stop quickly, given its size and weight. “It was one of those big construction trucks with a bobcat in the back bed. A big heavy truck that would never be able to stop fast enough,” they commented.

Although there are new bike lanes constructed on Bloor Street, commenters suggested that the bike lanes end in spots becoming turning lanes and carrying added risk to vulnerable road users.

“There’s a giant dumpster currently occupying that lane and parked cars sort of turning the westbound bike lane into a dead end. Not sure if the cyclist swerved into the road because of the blockage but the truck is in the westbound car lane quite a bit before the intersection. Really tragic incident,” another commenter wrote.

In addition, the Bloor bike lane construction is not yet complete and the area where the crash occurred is still, according to one commenter, very much under construction.

The bike lanes there are under construction still. It was right near Avenue. They just finished that segment but there are still trucks and stuff that block the lane,” wrote a commenter with the username bangnburn.

Construction of separated bike lanes is underway on Avenue Road as well, where three other cyclists have been killed by drivers in recent years.

The identity of the deceased cyclist has not been released, and the investigation is ongoing to determine the circumstances leading up to the collision. Authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward to aid in the investigation.
