This New Year’s Eve, you can head into Edmonton’s Sir Winston Churchill Square for an unforgettable celebration.

Each year, the City of Edmonton throws an enormous party in the centre of the city for the new year. This year is no different, with even more celebration and cheer than last. Here, you can join Mayor Andrew Knack for the incredible firework shows and enjoy a multitude of activities within the area.

Start off the new year right, surrounded by the amazing city of Edmonton.

What to expect

The festivities in Churchill Square kick off at 6 p.m. There’s going to be fun with the Arts District during this celebration, including free activities and entertainment at the Art Gallery of Alberta starting at 6 p.m., and fun at the Winspear Centre starting at 6:45 p.m.

You can also check out the fun beginning at Citadel Theatre at 6 p.m., with crafts, face painting, balloon artistry, a family-friendly dance party featuring DJ Sea Glass, and much more. The first 200 guests at the Citadel will receive a free cookie and a glow stick!

Both inside and outside City Hall is a whirlwind of adventure. This includes live music, cultural performances, skating, food trucks, fire twirling by Flowarrior and more. You can warm up inside with crafts, activities, and music by Next Stop, Otago, or you can take a trip outside for great beats and live music by vocalist and songwriter Robyn Ashley, Juno-nominated Métis fiddler Brianna Lizotte, Métis/Cree fiddler and singer-songwriter Zach Moostoos-Willier and the special headliner, pop-rock alt band The Royal Foundry.

In addition to the music and activities, the City Hall Plaza ice rink will be open, weather and ice conditions permitting. You can get free skate rentals and skate aids on a fire-come fire-served basis, and the skate change room is open from 6 p.m. to midnight.

For this year’s celebration, there will be two sets of fireworks shows: one at 8 p.m. and one at midnight. The 8 p.m. time takes into account families, while the midnight display is a classic countdown to the new year. Each show is approximately 10 minutes in length, taking place in the Stanley A. Milner Library.

Don’t forget to bundle up, as it’s a little more than chilly. Enjoy the fireworks and festivities, and have a Happy New Year!
