Big and bold red wines are commonly found in hotspots such as California as opposed to Canada’s cool-climate vineyards, but there are pleasing homegrown substitutes if you know where to look.

Canadian winemakers don’t always have the hot and dry conditions suitable for ripe California-style cabernets, but experience has taught them how to craft ripe and expressive reds from year to year. While pinot noir, gamay and cabernet franc are more consistent from vintage to vintage, merlot, cabernet sauvignon and syrah can produce rich and compelling wines given a substitute vineyard location and enough sun.

Popular California labels, such as Josh, J. Lohr and Tom Gore, have won over wine lovers with cabernets that suggest a range of ripe black cherry, blackberry and plum flavours enhanced by vanilla, smoke and spicy notes from oak aging. These wines celebrate concentration over complexity. The offer mouth-filling texture and dramatic length as part of their sunny and flavourful style.

They also attract attention for delivering crowd-pleasing character for an affordable price – in the $20 to $25 range in many markets.

For anyone looking to replace their favourite international labels, here are a selection of reds from Niagara and the Okanagan that deliver compelling full-bodied and fruity characters. I looked through my tasting notes of locally made red wines and passed over any samples that suggested cedar, savoury or earthy flavour profiles.

Seven Canadian white wines to drink instead of American chardonnay

Those attributes, which contribute fragrance and character to what’s in the glass, aren’t common to the commercial style found in mass-market brands. If they strike a chord with you, there’s an even wider range of red wines made here to be discovered.
