When it comes to iconic landmarks in Helsinki, there’s plenty of buildings to choose from: Helsinki Cathedral, the Oodi Library and basically the entire design district, to name a few.

And excitingly, one of its most legendary spots, Finlandia Hall, has just reopened after three years of extensive, €136 million renovation works. Its long-awaited relaunch is one of the reasons we recommended Helsinki in our guide to Europe’s best city breaks this year.

Replacing Finlandia’s distinctive façade was first on the to-do list, as its 11,000 marble tiles had been plagued by cracks since back when the building was completed in 1971. New marble has since been sourced from northern Italy, and NRT Architects, who carried out the restoration, have faith this could last at least 50 years.

A wine café and a new bistro (set to open this month) have been included in the renovation, and so has a permanent exhibition dedicated to Finlandia Hall’s original designer, Finnish modernist architect Alvar Aalto. The displays will be unveiled in June, but are also set to include homages to Aalto’s collaborators, including his two wives: Aino and Elissa Aalto.

Other exhibitions will showcase work by prominent Finnish artists such as Susanna Majuri and Birger Kaipiainen. Finlandia even includes two apartments now available for overnight stays.

As you might have sensed, this isn’t just a concert and conference hall anymore. While that will continue to be one of this brilliant building’s purposes, the aim now is to have it operate as a multi-purpose space.

‘Previously, it was known as a concert and conference venue requiring an invitation or ticket,’ said Johanna Tolonen, CEO of Finlandia Hall, according to euronews. ‘Now, locals and visitors can access it daily without restrictions.’
